Striiv Launches Portable Health Device That Blends Fitness With Gaming

StriivStriiv is launching a new device today that blends gaming, fitness, and more. The device itself is a little larger than an Apple Nano, and includes a high-resolution color screen. Striiv acts partly as a pedometer to track your activity and also allows you to play games, and use your activity to donate to charities. The device, which you can attach to a keychain or to a belt, tracks simple daily interactions like walking, taking the stairs, or exercise, and each activity earns, tracks and transforms your activities into games and donations. With Striiv every step counts toward a donation to charity. At launch, Striiv is partnering with GlobalGiving to donate clean water to children in South America or a polio vaccine to a child in India.

Microsoft Ties a Ribbon on Windows 8 Explorer

Speculation about what features Windows 8 will include is sizzling as Microsoft continues to remain tight-lipped about details of the new operating system. However, Redmond has talked to some extent about the upcoming OS' handling of Explorer, the Windows file management system. Posts on the Windows 8 blog indicate Explorer will have the ribbon GUI Microsoft Office users know -- and, in some cases, hate.

We can grow lots out of labs these days. When you can grown full brains and anal sphincters in petri dishes, muscle must seem like cake. Except that it doesn't hold up the way muscle should. The solution? Velcro. More »

The Droid Prime -- Just as Uncle Jerry predicted?

Jerry is a Witch

Who needs anonymous sources when you've got a witch like Jerry Hildenbrand? Here, in his own words, from last week's Android Central Podcast, is Jerry predicting a Nexus-caliber smartphone with Droid branding. Or, maybe Jerry and those anonymous sources are all wrong.

Open-Source Software Winning Mainstream Status in Enterprises

Industry observers have been predicting for years that open-source software will achieve mainstream adoption. Five years ago, open source was in its nascent stages and its future was promising but still unknown, said Michael Skok, general partner at North Bridge Venture Partners. He presented the fifth annual Future of Open Source Survey at Computerworlds Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco. The latest survey results clearly demonstrate that open source has gone mainstream, Skok said, as organizations focus on improving operational excellence around areas such as support, product management, feature functionality and return on investment. Open source is being implemented across a wide variety of markets and applications. Examples include the Obama administrations selection of the Drupal content-management system for WhiteHouse.gov, Yahoos Hadoop software framework being deployed in data centers to manage big data applications and Apaches software becoming the de facto standard for Web servers. Microsoft even includes Drupal in its Microsoft Web Platform. eWEEK presents some of the slides from Skoks keynote to highlight the major findings of the Future of Open Source Survey. - ...

iPad vs. PC debate shows the perils of tribal thinking

My comparison of iPads and PCs as platforms for user innovation last week generated the level of controversy usually reserved for Coke-versus-Pepsi arguments or, if you're a beer drinker, less-filling/tastes-great brawls.

Usually, I leave comments to the commenters, figuring I already got the big space in larger type that preceded them. This time, though, I can't resist. Here, then, are the major themes:

OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD lineup updated with smaller 60GB option for $130

Looking for a peppy SSD to turbo charge your workflow and don't need a whole lot of storage capacity? Back in June, Other World Computing introduced its speedy SandForce-endowed Mercury Electra 6G SSDs with a base model priced at $230 for 120GB. Now the company's added a cheaper option to keep things fast and your wallet happy. Those wanting a taste of its 556MB/s read and 523MB/s write speeds can now opt for a 60GB variation, priced at just $130. Sure, it may not be ideal for saving your entire Queen back catalog, but it could be a nifty route for faster boot-up and load times, right? It's available now from OWC. Zip past the break for the full PR.

Google to Let Users Post Bio Notes on Name Search Pages

Google now gives users the option to post a link to a Google profile at the bottom of name-query search pages, meaning that anyone searching for a user online can view information that the user wants the world to see. This potentially allows Google to use its search engine to create more of a social networking presence online, similar to Facebook and Twitter....
